President's Report

FROM OUR PRESIDENT...
Hi Payroll Pros.
I hope you enjoyed National Payroll Week and had a great time with your teams. Can you believe we are just a few weeks away from our conference? We will be at a beautiful hotel in Norfolk VA that overlooks the water. Hang out near the water with some of your payroll buddies, networking together and enjoying the comradery. It will be a great time to concentrate on your education and see all the new products and services our Exhibitors have to show us. Lots to see and learn.
In mentioning our Exhibitors, I would again like to thank them for their continued support. We could not do all we do without them. Our Gold Sponsoring Exhibitor, CBIZ is doing a webinar on September 22nd at 2pm. They are presenting “Tips for Engaging and Retaining Top Talent amid Inflation and Recession Concerns”. This webinar has been approved for 1 RCH and attendance is free. It is a great topic that I know all of us can learn more about. I hope you will consider joining this webinar and show your support to CBIZ who continues to support our organization as well as all Payroll Pro’s.
Are you ready to be out and about having fun with some of your payroll friends, I know I am. For those who know me, know that I will probably be hugging everyone I know, yes, I will ask permission first (smile). Come see me and say “Hello” and let me know how much you are enjoying the conference.
See you all in a few weeks.
Travel safely,
Linda Dailey, CPP
Memorial Educational Grant

MEG WINNER IS...
The Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference created the Memorial Educational Grant, earlier this year, to honor and memorialize our former VSPC Board Members that we have lost. Currently, the grant memorializes three individuals:
- Feldman Lane, CPP - 1952-2018
- Verlie Medford, CPP - 1949-2020
- Timothy Massenburg, CPP - 1963-2021
The Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference received numerous applicants for the 2022 Memorial Education Grant. Each applicant provided a different look into what payroll professionals do to enhance their education and careers overall. We would like to thank those who submitted applications:
- Ashley Bowen
- Janet Darko, CPP
- Wendy Gay, CPP
- Alana Litz, CPP-SHRM CP
- Krittaya Norris
- Desiree Rhodes
- Michelle Wilder
Applications were carefully scrubbed to remove any detail that directly identified the applicant. The applications were forwarded to our judges (3 former Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference Presidents). The judges scored each application independent from the other. The applicant with the highest average score and our 2022 Memorial Education Grant recipient is Alana Litz, CPP-SHRM CP. Congratulations!
Payroll Professional of the Year

PAYROLL PROFESSIONAL of the YEAR...
Each year the Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference awards this prestigious honor to one individual who stands out for their accomplishments, contributions, and outstanding leadership abilities. The Payroll Professional of the Year is one of the highest honors that the VSPC bestows upon a member of our payroll community. Each year, we look forward to receiving all the nominations. A special “thank you” to those who submitted nominations. We appreciate your involvement in this process.
The selection of our PPY has a three-part process:
- Nominations are submitted to the VSPC which were due by Friday, August 26, 2022.
- Nominees complete a survey detailing their accomplishments, contributions, and leadership skills which was due Friday, September 9, 2022.
- Our Platinum Sponsor reviews redacted surveys to determine who stands out the most in the current selection process.
DailyPay is our 2022 Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference Platinum Sponsor. We are excited to have them announce our winner at the Conference next month. They will announce our 2022 Payroll Professional of the Year during our 2022 VSPC Welcome Session on Thursday, October 13th which begins at 7:50 a.m. Please join us to celebrate all those who were nominated and congratulate our winner.
Charity

CHARITY RAFFLE...
It’s that time of year again where the VSPC and associated chapters raise money for a charity. This year’s charity is Seton Youth Shelters. It is a great charity that currently provides emergency shelter, counseling, and support 24 hours per day without charge to youth, ages 9 through 17, who are in crisis. We have the opportunity to raise funds by purchasing raffle tickets at the conference. Tickets are $2, 3 tickets for $5. Be sure to bring cash or a check and help us to raise money for Seton Youth Shelters.
We can also bring in donations for the shelter. Their wish list is on the website. Items include clothing and shoes, hygiene items, gift cards for clothing, gift cards for food, and outings as a group. You are welcome to bring items to the conference as a representative from the shelter will be joining us on Friday.

Did You Know.....

The VSPC Payroll Conference is a lifeline for networking, continuing education, and earning your certification credits. It is an opportunity to learn from the best in your field and network with new people in your backyard.
COVID turned the world upside down, and the VSPC was not spared. Last year was our first year back in person, and while it was a challenge to navigate the protocols for health and safety, we all pulled together to host an in-person event. Now that we have some experience under our belts, we know this year’s event, “ Monster Mash – It’s a Payroll Bash,” will be a success.
The conference committee is here to help our members get the most out of their conference experience. But, maybe you aren’t sure what your goals should be at the conference, or you don’t feel confident about networking with strangers. Here are a few tips to help you achieve your goals.
The WHOVA app is your guide to everything happening at the VSPC.
- Your schedule and all events are right at your fingertips. You can even complete session surveys with WHOVA.
- Reach out to attendees and introduce yourself —even if you aren’t usually comfortable networking with strangers.
- Connect with the key speaker – Submit questions or answer a survey posted by a speaker.
- Join in one of the social media games hosted on the WHOVA app for a chance to win great prizes.
There are a lot of benefits of attending the VSPC that go beyond the simple “network and learn from speakers.” Of course, those are important, but there are other benefits you may not have considered.
- Social media content from the conference can introduce you to new products and services or job opportunities.
- Trading notes on processes and tactics with people in the payroll profession.
- Setting up initial meetings for vendor partnerships to improve your processes or replace outdated applications.
- Hearing about the latest tools in design or new methods for improving efficiency.
Connecting with VSPC organizers and speakers can open new opportunities. Remember, one great connection can lead to a new job opportunity or vendor partnership. It only takes one new idea, if it’s the right one, to change how you approach your work.
Begin preparing your goals for attending this year’s Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside.
Food Network in Norfolk, Virginia...
That’s right. If you are addicted to the “Food Network” and watch “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” you may have seen one of these restaurants. So why not come down early on Wednesday or stay Saturday to check one or more of them out.
Doumar’s
If you love a waffle cone, then you are going to want to visit Doumar’s. They claim to be the Home of the “World’s First Cone Machine” for over a century. Plus, who doesn’t want to top off the day with a sundae. An inexpensive option for pork BBQ, burgers, hot dogs, ham, sandwiches, ice cream floats, and a good waffle cone.
The Grilled Cheese Bistro
www.thegrilledcheesebistro.com
Comfort food at its finest. Our childhood dream that can include lobster, salmon, and even pulled pork. A grilled cheese dream where combinations are limitless. You can go old school with a three-cheese combination or bring it on with their “Don Quixote” which includes Fontina, Parmesan, Sautéed Onion, Mushroom, and Roasted Red Peppers. Add some fresh cut fries or fried pickles and it is a great option to be right at home.
Get Fresh Café
www.5ptsfarmarket.org/get-fresh-cafe
Interested in something healthier. Perhaps farm to table is your style. Check out Get Fresh Market. There is a vegan sloppy Joe that has unbeatable flavor, according to Guy Fieri. It is as fresh as you can get.
You won’t go hungry in Norfolk, but we wanted to give you a few ideas from restaurants featured on the Food Network. Be sure to bring your appetite and sense of adventure.
Speakers

SPEAKERS...
The VSPC Speaker Committee has worked hard this year to line up great speakers and topics. Here are some of the sessions that you can look forward to attending “DOL Updates to Include Misclassifications and Calculating OT” presented by Brian Muse. “Payroll Auditing Techniques” by our colleague and requested APA National Speaker, Rosemarie Fraumeni, CPP. “Office Politics” by our friend Dan Dycus, CPP and you won’t want to miss the General Session Round Table as our own Board Members, Gerard Hall, CPP and Stephanie Salavejus, CPP present “Dragging Yourself Back from Ransomware Hell”. We will finish up the conference with “What Payroll Needs to Know About Remote Work” presented by William (Bill) Dunn, CPP. We have two days filled with many educational opportunities that include some new topics and a few old favorites. If there are specific topics that you would like us to consider for next year’s conference, please let us know. We look forward to seeing you all in just a few weeks.
VSPC Social

SOCIAL...
After a long day of educational workshops, release your inner Monet by joining us for “Sip and Paint” social. Enjoy some down time by networking and painting with other payroll pros like you. No artistic talent is required, but a great attitude and wanting to have fun is. Grab a canvas, a brush, and a beverage, and then you’re all set for an amazing night with your payroll friends on October 13, 2022.
VSPC Conference App

WHOVA APP...
We are looking forward to seeing and connecting with everyone at this year’s conference. Remember, Whova is the app that we are using to stay connected, keep on schedule and have fun while at the conference. Remember like last year, your participation on the Whova app before and during the conference racks up points. Will you be on the top of the leader board for Whova points????
