Charity
For 2012, the VSPC has selected the William Byrd Community House as our charity for the Richmond, Virginia conference.
The William Byrd Community House works with the entire community to create pathways to success for individuals and families. They approach their work by looking at the assets that people possess and build on that capital to address needs. This philosophy changes the way they view those who come through their doors, call them, write them, email them and see them outside of William Byrd. They have a vision to transform the lives of people. They start by creating an environment of positivity, hope and safety by providing a strong message that every person has gifts and talents and these things are assets to us all.
The William Byrd Community House works in the community with other partner organizations to coordinate services, form partnerships, and to move our community beyond what we see on the front page of the papers and into a vision of transformation.
The William Byrd Community House traces its history to 1900 and continues to impact over 1,100 individuals each month. Their approach is simple; identify talents and skills of every person who comes to the house for help and build upon them.
The William Byrd Community House wish list is broken down into several different areas. The list is in the left navigation under Charity Wish List.
For more information visit The William Byrd Community House on the web.

Colonial Capital Chapter of the APA – The cost of payroll compliance is often a burden for most all companies but especially for small organizations. If you work in a small organization it is very likely you wear many “hats” and can even be the sole workforce in your department. How can you help your organization with this challenge? Earn your certification and stay up-to-date on critical payroll issues. The Colonial Capital Chapter’s CPP/FPC Study group is offered twice a year and our bi-monthly meeting topics focus on the latest changes in law and regulations. To learn more about membership and continuing education opportunities, visit www.ccc-apa.com.
Hampton Roads Chapter of the APA – Our last meeting was held on September 13th. We carried over the NPW spirit by inviting our bosses to join us for our breakfast meeting. Our theme for this event was “Keeping Fit With Payroll”. Ms. Kelly Sutherland came and demonstrated exercises that can be done at our desk to relieve stress throughout the day! We also presented our $400.00 annual education scholarship at this meeting. This year’s recipient was Donna Caruso. Congratulations Donna!

Southwest Virginia Chapter of the APA – The Southwest Virginia Chapter of the APA held a great meeting during the week of National Payroll Week. It was full of fun, laughter, food, games, music, and prizes! It was an enjoyable time that was well-deserved for each of us that work in Payroll and endure some challenging periods throughout each year. We continue to have great attendance and participation in each of our monthly meetings. We have several members that will be traveling to Richmond for the Statewide Conference, so safe travels to them and have fun!
Washington Metropolitan Area Chapter of the APA – The WMAC is busy planning for 2013. We are on the move in 2013 with lots of changes. We are moving our meeting location to Springfield, VA near Interstate 495 and 95 and we are having more meetings in 2013. We are trying this to accommodate the needs and recommendations we received from a member survey we did over the summer. So look for all kinds of new things coming for WMAC and its members. Oscar Fun Facts
1. The Oscar statuette is not made of gold. It is a pewter-like alloy called britannium, which is 93 percent tin, 5 percent antimony and 2 percent copper. It is then plated with gold.
2. The nude male figure on the statuette stands atop a reel of film with five spokes, representing actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers.
3. Since 1950, Oscar winners must agree not to sell their statuettes without first offering them to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for $1.
4. "The Godfather" (1972) was the first best picture winner to include a scene in which an Oscar statuette was visible. (It was also the first winner to have a scene set in Los Angeles.)
5. The only Academy Award winner named Oscar was songwriter Oscar Hammerstein.
6. The most Oscar wins by a woman is eight, by costume designer Edith Head.
7. Woody Allen has the record for the most screenplay nominations, with 15. (Allen has attended only one Oscar ceremony, in 2002, for a post-9/11 tribute to New York.)
8. The only films to win best picture, director, actor, actress and screenplay are "It Happened One Night" (1934), "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) and "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991).
9. The most common occupation for an Oscar-nominated character is English monarch.
10. Two families have had three generations of Oscar winners: The Hustons (actor Walter, writer-director John and actress Angelica); and the Coppolas (composer Carmine, writer-director Francis and writer Sofia).
